The NDIS, Cairns & GSL
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will begin rolling out in Queensland in 2016 with a scheduled completion date in 2019. It is the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), an independent agency, that is responsible for implementing the NDIS.
The first sites in Queensland for the NDIS roll out are Townsville, Charters Towers and Palm Island. Around 1600 people are expected to be eligible for the NDIS in these sites, with up to 600 expected to receive their funded packages by 1 July 2016.
The remaining 1000 people can expect to receive funded packages from July 2016.
This scheme will create new opportunities for families in our community with children who are eligible. These are exciting times, full of hope and optimism!
It’s also a new way of doing things. The NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) all about using supports to live more independently and people working towards achieving goals and aspirations. It includes a specific focus on early intervention support for children, with the aim of providing the right types of supports to reduce the impact of a disability on a child’s life into the future – ‘a good start to life’.
In preparation for the NDIS roll out, GSL has been working with Government officials and client stakeholders, so we can anticipate the impact it’s likely to have on our community. We want to make sure we are fully prepared and able to be a ‘guide on the side’ for young adults and families going through the transition phase.
The NDIS, Cairns & You
An important part of the NDIS is planning. Planning relies on setting goals and knowing what is needed to achieve those goals. This isn’t always easy, particularly for people who have never planned in this way before.
We’re here to help.
We have become a Host Provider for the greater Cairns area and have modelled our approach on the principles of how the NDIS works with individuals and families. We will work with any individual and family to guide and support you to become confident in self managing and directing your Individual Funded Services packages.
We have started working with some of the young adults coming to our Learning and Life Skills Program to practice visualising the future and making plans. We can do the same for parents or carers.
GSL can help to explain the changes the NDIS will bring, and provide the support and guidance you feel you need to make informed choices and decisions while going through this transition phase.
Until the NDIS has been rolled into our area you will continue to be covered by your existing funding arrangement.
If you have any questions about how the NDIS will affect you or someone you care for then please don’t hesitate to contact us.
